Botox: Taking The Fight to Wrinkles

The beauty industry, fueled by social media influencers and celebrities, has its way of churning out countless trends aimed at battling the ever-persistent nemesis of aging. From eye creams to face masks, there seems to be an endless list of potions promising youthful skin. Among the rising trends, Botox, a neurotoxic protein that relaxes facial muscles, is gaining popularity among younger demographics. But can starting Botox treatments early in life prevent wrinkles in the future? Or is it simply an addictive, expensive, and temporary solution?

The idea is simple: Botox freezes wrinkles. If introduced early, you can prevent the formation of lines that people generally seek to correct later in life. It seems as if an increasing number of people in their 20s and 30s are subscribing to this notion. According to a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 811,000 Botox procedures were performed on people in their 30s in 2020, making up approximately 18% of the national total.

Botox works by limiting movement. It blocks acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, and with repeated use, users may weaken their facial muscles, potentially slowing the transformation of dynamic lines (those that form when you express an emotion) into static lines (those visible when your face is at rest). The reasoning is sound, but it’s worth noting that even with Botox, you will still express emotions and inevitably form some wrinkles.

Most dermatologists agree that this approach can indeed delay the appearance of wrinkles and there is evidence to support the idea

One 2006 study did observe identical twins over 13 years. One received regular Botox injections, while the other did not. The results showed that the twin who had received regular injections had fewer visible lines where the injections were performed compared to her sister, who had not received treatments. A 2011 study also found significant wrinkle reduction in a group of 45 women, aged between 30 and 50, who received botulinum toxin injections in their foreheads every four months for two years. But these findings are based on small studies and should not be generalized.

Some dermatologists even pointed out the negative effects of pausing treatment. Once a person stops the injections, the progress isn’t reversed, but the full mobility of facial muscles returns, leading to the formation of wrinkles over time.

While Botox seems to be the current solution for preserving youth, it may not be the only or the best solution for everyone. Alternatives such as retinols, which can increase collagen in the skin and counteract the visible effects of aging, or simply applying sunscreen regularly, offer a more affordable option.
